TAG QUESTION

Def      : Pertanyaan singkat yang terletak setelah kalimat (sentence).
Form    :
Sentence, aux + S ?
E.g.
-         Mereka sedang belajar, kan?
Ø  They are studying, aren’t they?

Fungsi  :
1.      Meminta persetujuan
E.g.
-         Kamu kelihatannya gak sehat, ya?
Ø  You look not so well, don’t you?
2.      Sebagai penegasan
E.g.
-         Aku ini temanmu, bukan?
Ø  I am your friend, aren’t I?
3.      Menanyakan kebenaran informasi
E.g.
-         Julia datang kesini, gak?
Ø  Julia came here, didn’t she?

Kinds of Tag Question
a.       Statement
Peraturan Umum
1.    Jika statement (+), maka tag (-)
Jika statement (-), maka tag (+)
E.g.
-       She is collecting stickers, isn’t she?
-       We don’t often watch TV in the afternoon, do we?

2.        Negative tag harus disingkat.
-       Do not         = don’t
-       Does not      = doesn’t
-       Did not        = didn’t
-       Am not        = aren’t
-       Are not        = aren’t
-       Must not      = needn’t/mustn’t …….etc.

3.        Subject tag harus berupa pronoun.
(I, you, we, they, she, he, it, there)
e.g.
-       Sarah is very smart, isn’t Sarah? (Incorrect)
-       Sarah is very smart, isn’t she? (Correct)

NOTICE!!!
v Indefinite Pronoun
-       Person, menjadi “THEY”
=> Someone       => Somebody
=> Anyone          => Anybody
=> Everyone       => Everybody
=> No one          => Nobody
-       Non-Person, menjadi “IT”
=> Something      => Anything
=> Everything      => Nothing
E.g.
1. Somebody should take it, shouldn’t they?
2. Everything is important, isn’t it?

Peraturan Khusus
1.    Tag auxiliary mengikuti bentuk dan tenses statement
E.g.
-       You aren’t a nurse, were you? (Incorrect)
-       You aren’t a nurse, are you? (Correct)
2.    Tag auxiliary menggunakan auxiliary yang pertama
E.g.
-       Bob has been working for 5 hours, hasn’t been he? (Incorrect)
-       Bob has been working for 5 hours, hasn’t he? (Correct)

3.    Auxiliary subject “there”, tergantung Subjective Complement.
E.g.
-       There is a pen on the table, isn’t there?
-       There aren’t two cats under the chair, are there?

4.    Jika terdapat “Negative Expression”, maka tag (+)

-       He and you are classmate, aren’t you?
-       Bill and Tom weren’t here, were they?

b.      Imperative
1.      Subject full (Invitation)
Form:
Let’s + (not) + V1, SHALL WE?
E.g.
-       Let’s finish it soon, shall we?
-       Let’s not be late, shall we?

2.      Subject less
Form:
(Don’t) + V1, WILL YOU?
E.g.
-       Wait in your place obediently, will you?
-       Don’t cover my way, will you?
-       Be faithful, will you!
-       Don’t be unfaithful, will you?
