SUBJUNCTIVE

Def      : Kalimat pengharapan yang bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan.

Subjunctive words
1.      Wish                     : berharap
2.      Would rather        : lebih suka
3.      If only                  : jika saja
4.      As if / as though   : seolah2, seakan2

Kinds:
1.      Present Subjunctive
ð Bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan masa sekarang.
ð Jika Subjunctive (+), maka fakta (-), dan sebaliknya.
ð Fact : Simple Present
ð Jika melibatkan “be”, semua subject menggunakan “were”.
ð Form:
a.     S + wish +(that) + simple past
E.g.
I wish that she were faithful
Fact: She is unfaithful

b.    S + would rather + simple past
E.g.
She would rather her father came home today.
Fact: her father doesn’t come home today.

c.     If only + simple past, + simple past future
E.g.
If only I were you, I would accept her invitation.
Fact: I am not you

d.    Simple present + as if/as though + simple past
E.g.
Bob speaks as though he didn’t know French well.
Fact: Bob  knows French well.

2.      Past Subjunctive
ð Bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan masa lampau.
ð Jika Subjunctive (+), maka fakta (-), dan sebaliknya.
ð Fact : Simple Past
ð Form :
a.     S + wish +(that) + past perfect
E.g.
I wish (that) she had called me yesterday.
Fact: she didn’t call me yesterday

b.    S + would rather + past perfect
E.g.
Glen would rather he had got a job last year.
Fact: Glen didn’t get a job last year.

c.     If only + past perfect, + past future perfect
E.g.
If only she hadn’t got an accident last month, I would have invited her in my party.
Fact: she got an accident last month.

d.    Simple past + as if/as though + past perfect
E.g.
Rose danced as if she had been Julia Perez
Fact: Rose was not Julia Perez

3.      Future Subjunctive
ð Bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan dimasa yang akan dating.
ð Fact : Simple future
ð Form :
a.     S + wish +(that) + simple past future
E.g.
I wish that I would get married tomorrow
Fact : I will not get married tomorrow
